END OF THE YEAR FOR CHILDREN WHO OVERCAME SELECTIVE MUTISM

This year, I received several videos and pictures of children graduating from preschool and getting ready for kindergarten. Their parents shared beautiful moments of them smiling, singing, participating in graduation ceremonies, and enjoying milestones that once felt very difficult to reach. Many of these children had previously struggled with significant anxiety and had been diagnosed with selective mutism.

Seeing their progress has been deeply meaningful. These successes did not happen by chance. The parents were remarkably dedicated and open to treatment recommendations, and the schools collaborated closely throughout the process. Together, we worked as a team, consistently applying evidence-based strategies that help children with selective mutism gain confidence, communicate more comfortably, and participate more fully in their environments.

A major part of these children’s progress came from the strong partnership between families, schools, and therapy. The willingness of parents and educators to communicate openly, remain patient, and support gradual exposure and confidence-building created the conditions for growth and success.

To all the parents, thank you for your trust and for allowing me to work alongside you and your children. Your persistence, advocacy, and commitment made an enormous difference. To the schools and teachers, thank you for welcoming collaboration, opening your classrooms and doors to support, and helping create safe and encouraging environments for these children to thrive.

And most importantly, to the children: your courage has been inspiring. We are so proud of how far you have come, and we look forward to hearing more wonderful news as you continue into summer camp, kindergarten, and the many exciting stages ahead.
