Questions to ask when choosing a child psychologist:
- Is the psychologist specialized and Board Certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology?
- Is the psychologist going to use empirically based assessments and intervention to work with your child and family?
- Is the psychologist going to develop a treatment plan with you that is concrete and clear to all involved, including you, the child (when the child is older), the parents, and the school?
- How is the psychologist going to measure change and improvement? How often are they willing to meet with the parents to go over changes?
- Is the psychologist willing to work with school (in the case of SM, for instance), and go to school, and to public places especially in the case of Selective Mutism?
- Is the psychologist culturally sensitive to the family background, and respectful of that culture of the family?
- When do we finish therapy? How to do decide when the goal was achieved?
